                               Update   and consultation

Dear  Haselbury Ward Residents,

As you may be aware the weir Hall Library campaign  has never stopped since the previous Tory administration decided to close it in 2008.

Weir Hall Library will be  back  and running soon.

As a result of the continues campaign we have been able to get an agreement from the new Labour administration in Enfield and they have offered us, to start with, the Ground floor room at Millfield House the former bar area. (  bar no longer there as they have demolished it to make the room bigger).
The library will be up and running mostly by volunteers with professional supervision.
If this library proves to be successful we may get a bigger building. We promise we will and we did it.     Who said we are all the same . Well we are not

We will like to ask you for your opinion, and overleaf there is a questionnaire as to what else you will like to see   happening in Haselbury Ward.
We have been allocated £129,000.00 each year for the next 3 year amounting up to £387k in  projects for the community.
Some   of  these money may go towards the library but we may consider for example to have a centre for the elderly and another for the youth or perhaps free gyms.

We are just giving a small example of some ideas but if you like to let us know what other project/s you will like to see  being introduced in Haselbury Ward  we will be more than happy to have your opinion and ideas.
If the money is not spent within a year then  the  money will be returned. If you will like to speak to us please contact George Savva on 020 8351 1385, or Patricia Ekechi 020 8379   1743  email cllr.george.savva@enfield.gov.uk or   cllr.patricia.ekechi@enfield.gov.uk

FROM

   George  A. Savva M.B.E.

Brief introduction

                 www.haselburyward.com

My name is George Savva and I have been serving as a councillor for 25 years, representing the same ward for just as many years. The old ward had the name Huxley and following the boundary changes it was renamed Haselbury ward in 2002.

Since  I was elected I have had my majority increased to more than double and the majority of votes in my favour is ever increasing.

I am married with 4 grown up sons and 3 granddaughters.

Have studied at the London College of Fashion in Oxford Street  in  the West End of London , have attended the local College and studied history and the life of Martin Luther King.  Have attended a number of training seminars around crime prevention, local services  for the elderly and the work around involving the young generation in local affairs and their participation in the decision making mechanism.

Was involved in a number of projects locally .

I am a member of the GMB union and prior to that a member of TGWU

Also a member of the Labour and  CO OP  movement.

Since 1979 and ever since,  I have been involved in campaigns for local services to be improved and fought  against closures  and cut backs of public services .

Fought against the closure of the radiotherapy unit at North Mid and collected thousands of signatures for a community centre to be set up and succeeded having the Community House  at 311, Fore Street N18.

Served as chair of the Property Services Sub Committee at Enfield, on the main education committee and many other committees and was resoponsible for the introduction of the two hour free parking in shopping centres such as Southgate Edmonton Green,, Enfield Town , which helped towards the regenaration of these areas.

Campaigned for safety improvements in our community and I have asked for extra police patrols in the Ward.

The most recent campaign was the fight against the closure of Weir Hal Library. where I  have made career sacrifices to spend  my time on the fight against the closure of Weir Hall Library, where it is hoped one day will  be reinstated. 10.000 signatures were collected and were presented to no 10 Downing Street. As a result  we managed  at least to save  Millfield Theatre which is adjacent to Weir Hall Library.

The community rallied behind me to have the library saved and I will like to thank all those people known and unknown who have offered help in every way they could. A big thank you to All.

Within Millfield Arts Complex there is space to have a library and the disused warehouses along the car park on the left as you enter the Complex where these can easily be turned into a local service such as the much needed library.

Thanks should also go to the local press for their interest and radio stations and television for covering the campaign and other  of our activities in the community.

One local television company even covered the meeting of the Area Forum where we had 250 people present. I shall continue to campaign for better facilities for all in the community ,for better services for the youth and for the elderly.

Currently I am pushing for a further new residential home to be built to cater for the  increasing ageing population.

Am pushing the local council to explore the possibility of starting a youth club at either within the Millfield Arts Complex or within the Klinger Hall Estate .

Have campaigned for the Glady's Aylward Plaque to be replaced since  the plaque went missing in December 2008. The Enfield Society and The Gladys Aylward School will be paying towards the cost s.   The plaque will be put up in  January  2010.

Will like to see as many of you as possible attending the  1 year Vigil since the closure of Weir Hall Library

This 1 year Vigil will take plae on Saturday 19th December 2009 from 0.00 a.m.  till 2.00. p.m.  We will be having mince pies and malt Wine.  All are welcome. The campaign will continue until we get our library back.

No one in their right minds closes a library and turns it into a bistro. Unless of course your name is Mike Rye and Mike Laneder serving as leader and deputy leader in the Tory controlled Enfield Council.

Enough is Enough. Time for them to go I say.

I am serving as a member  on the Firs Farm Governing body since 1985. Served for many years as a governor at Winchmore and Edmonton County schools including Oaktree Special school.

Was appointed as deputy Mayor  Mayor in 1994-1995  and as Mayor in 1995-1996 in the London Borough of Enfield  and  at the same  time raised over £36.000 for charity.

Have received an M.B.E. from  her Majesty the Queen for Services to the Community and to the London Borough of Enfield.

Was responsible for the installation of traffic  light signals at the Cambridge Roundabout A406/A10

This is just  a brief  history on some of my activities and posts I held and  still hold.

I am always in contact with the community and can be easily contacted by the constituents.

Currently I am the Lead on Adult Social Services for the Labour opposition in Enfield serving on a number of committees such as Education Standards Forum, Mental Health Personalisation Of Care Licensing Panel and many more.

Founder of the Lefkara Association of Great Britain in 1985, charity number 295494 where we have  helped a large number of people who are sick disabled or  in need to further their education, This charity has held a number of seminars by self financing the events  in the past and have managed to purchase an ambulance for a hospital.Held a number of seminars on Drug and Alcohol related issues. The Association has a website www.lefkaraassociation.org.uk

Recently we held 3 seminarswith the the help in form of sponsorship from the National  Lottery Awards For all Funding and the Safer Stronger Communities Board. Be Safe Feel Safe .

The seminars were  around the topical issue on Violenve and Crime followed by Drugs and Alcohol Abuse and the Third Around Education Training and Apprenticeships. All were very well attended and it  is hoped we will be holding further seminars and conferences during 2010
