        LABOUR NEWS

SAME OLD TORY SAME OLD STORY

Friend -

I wasn't intending to write to you tonight - but that was before David Cameron's dog whistle comments during tonight's debate.

In a discussion about immigrant workers, he said 1.2 million "illegal immigrants" would flood the country, and that they'd demand "access to welfare and access to council housing".

What does that sound like to you? David Cameron keeps telling us he's changed, but this is a tactic straight out of the Tories' old campaign book.

It's the same old Tories and we can't let it stand. Take a moment now to get the word out: Cameron's party is the same old nasty Conservative Party that is for fear first, people last.

http://sameoldtories.com/dogwhistle

The policy of regularising immigrants' status - ensuring they operate under the law, and pay their share in tax - is a moderate policy backed by politicians across the board, including Tory Mayor Boris Johnson.

But with an election on, Cameron is getting dirty. We can't let this go - please help get the word out: the Tories haven't changed.

Neal

Gordon Brown came through with flying colours on the Leaders Debate.

Well Done Gordon.

The Sun newspaper got it wrong once again  with its biased pro Tory Attitude.

Working and Middle Classes should support all Labour candidates for abetter tomorrow for this Country.

Well Done Gordon.
If you want the truth follow this website or Daily and Sunday  Mirror Newspapers.

We will defend the truth and fight dishonesty

VOTE LABOUR ON THURSDAY   6TH MAY 2010
To help this Country  Go Forward.

                      By George  A Savva

The Labour Government are committed to help end the recession and help businesses and people get back to work by investing £60 million back into the economy.

The Conservatives are planning if they ever get to power to take that away   from the economy leaving businesses to sink or swim as they have done in the past under Thatcher and Major.

The Labour Government have committed themselves to help the NHS provide an even better service enabling people to get the treatment as soon as possible at specialists hospital not having to wait for over two years for an operation.

A brand new wing will be up and running in June 2010 at the North Middlesex Hospital where the government have invested heavily.

Waiting lists have been reduced because people get the help and treatment within six weeks not 2 years when it was under the Tories.

But the Tories may tell us one thing that they care when in fact their agenda is to encourage people to get Private Care leaving the NHS to suffer and those who rely on it.

Gordon Brown and the Labour Government have given a new boost to NHS by employing 38,000 doctors and 95,000 nurses.
Have given a £90 billion investment   in the NHS over the last few years.

The Labour Government have reduced the classroom sizes from 35 under Thatcher and the Conservatives to fewer than 30 and in some cases 28

No more leaky roofs at schools as the government have given funds to local councils to spend it on repairs.

But let us have a look at local level. For example in Enfield during the  Labour administration from 1994 and up to 2002 no less than 4 new schools were built.
At a time when parents are given a place at the school of their choice one would have thought that the highest of priorities is to build new schools.

I have been critical of this Tory administration in Enfield on the lack of proper planning and vision.

Prior to 1994 the Conservatives closed at least two schools one of them was Minchenden.

But from 2002 till now where the Conservatives are in power up to now, they have not built a single school but to the contrary they have closed a library.

What promises have the Tories or the Lib Dem given.

Apart from attacking Gordon   Brown nothing much.

Oh, em sorry I forgot they will give to 3.000 millionaires a £200,000  tax benefit.
Of course Cameron is not a pro European and he has no friends in Europe apart from the Check Republic. This leaves me   to ask where will Cyprus find support in Europe if God forbid the Conservatives take control.

And the Lib Dems will take us back to the early 50s and 60s where people needed visas to travel.

Voting for the Conservatives and the Lib Dems will truly be a waste of vote and a vote against Cyprus.

Since the Tories have launched their manifesto they have even had time to wake up the average working class person’s racial instincts by mentioning the immigration and the refugees. Are they BNP in disguise?

During the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus it was local Labour authorities who helped a large number of families seeking help and shelter when they fled the troubled island.

But let us have a look at what is happening today in Enfield   and what mess they have brought themselves and the borough into.

I have mentioned in the past Enfield’s vision and I will not mentioned  many things apart from when  we were asking for a two year council tax freeze on the increase they called us all sorts of names which prompted the opposition Labour Group to conduct a campaign with petitions and heated  discussions at Council.

When Labour is in power after May 6th we will freeze the Council Tax increase for two years.

                                                  DIVIDED ENFIELD

For Edmonton and the East part of the Borough very little but for Enfield Town and the Forty Hall everything.

They closed a library in Edmonton and they spent £8 million  in Enfield Town .

We were  asking  for a youth club and what they have done was to spent money in Forty hall.
They have closed youth clubs and they have not encouraged anyone to come forward and be trained as youth leaders.

Thanks to the Labour Government but not to Enfield Council £3.03 million has been given to built a state of the Art Youth Club in the most deprived area of Edmonton.

Labour are promising

Two year council tax freeze

A £100 Council Tax rebate for the over 65s

A pilot scheme to give primary children free school meals.

Youth workers to tackle anti social behaviour.

Cleaning streets and combat anti social behaviour.
Where possible to install alley gates.

Labour has achieved dos much let us not throw that away

For families

Families have received unprecedented support through the introduction

 of
Child Trust Funds, Sure Start, Working families Tax Credits, Extended Maternity Leave, £190 Health –In-Pregnancy grant , A free nursery place for every 3 and 4 year- old

The Conservatives voted against Labour’s help for families and they already have plans to take that away fro the families.

For Older People

Labour has transformed the lives of older people through the introduction      of

Winter Fuel Allowance, Pension Credit and year-on-year increase pensions, Free Bus Travel, Free Eye Tests and prescriptions, Free TV licenses, Free Swimming
Increase Cold Weather Payments

The Conservatives do not really care and will leave pensioners suffer as they did in the 1980s The Conservatives have opposed much of Labour’s support for the elderly.

At the polling station you will be given two ballot papers One for the local elections White colour ballot paper you have 3 votes.

The other ballot paper cream colour for the General elections one vote

And In Edmonton Vote for Andy Love

In Enfield Southgate for Bambos Charalambous

In Enfield North               Joan Ryan

Every vote has 3 votes for the local election on the white ballot paper.

One vote on the cream ballot poare for the General Elections.

For example in Haselbury ward the Labour candidates for the Local Elections are
ALI Bakir number       1 X
PATRICIA Eckechi     3 X
GEORGE    Savva       5 X

Give your 3 votes to the Labour candidates.
And One vote on the Labour Candidate on the cream Ballot paper.

Gordon Brown and  Labour  the only Real Choice for  real people

                                     By   George A. Savva

If anyone ever doubted the ability and leadership, quality side of Gordon Brown, the last few weeks and even months have proven beyond any doubt that he is truly a leader who has gone through very hard times and has pulled through the worst economic global crisis for years.

At a time when the Tories have considered that their best policy is to attack Gordon Brown, at a time when the electorate want to know what the Conservatives have to offer.

The truth of the matter the Tories have no real policies and the only way forward is to just attack Brown in the hope that the voters will fall for it.

At the same time the Sun newspaper along with Daily Mail and Daily Express some of the right wing newspapers who are sadly read by the working class, and are urging people to vote Tory not knowing what disasters await them round the corner if ever the Tories get into some kind of power.

The reason there have no   real policies is that they have no vision or conviction among them and only way they know is Thatcherism, but they do not want admit it.

Have you also noticed the split that is beginning to emerge among them and the disagreements they have among them especially between Mayor Johnson and Cameron.

There are threats to us all from the right wing Conservatives and here are six of them.

Six reasons to say no to   Conservatives

They will not deal with the recession but will let it run its course leaving people to swim or sink as they did in the 80s and 90s

They will give £200,000  to 3,000 millionaires but they did not back the Labour Government to give 1.3 million to unemployed to get back to work. (after the 2009 now £3 million)

Thy will pull out of the EU Social Chapter which means cuts in employment rights like paid holidays and breaks.

Slash £4.5 million from Labour’s budget school rebuilding programme, returning to crumbling buildings , freezing classrooms and leaking roofs.

Cut the works and d Pensions budget doing nothing to help the most vulnerable in the se tough economic times.
                                                            Do not let them
The Tories will certainly take us back to Poverty pay by not increasing the tax credits or the National minimum wage
Double digit interest rates, hitting 15% and averaging 10%.
NHS  waiting lists over 400,000, with many waiting over 18 months.

                                                 BETTER OF WITH LABOUR

Six reasons to Vote Labour

Labour will give real help during the economic global crisis helping Britain to recover faster.

Making work pay, with a National Minimum Wage and tax credits for families and low –paid workers.

Paid Holidays , proper rest breaks and time –off for all workers.

Paid maternity leave extended to nine months introduction of paid paternity leave and adoption leave.

More than double the Tories’ spending on schools and the Health Service

A decent minimum income guarantee for all pensioners plus Winter Fuel Allowance and free local bus travel. State    pensions to be re-linked to earnings.
All these will be under threat if the Tories get back to power. Se the six points above under

Some people say to me there is no difference between the parties One look at these statements will again confirm strongly the big gap that exists between the Caring Labour Party and the Conservatives who will again help the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Do we really wish to go back to the era of Thatcherism Cameron and his Tory cronies wish us to go both Nationally and Locally.

By Jeff Rodin
It is now only a few weeks until the voters of Enfield will get the opportunity to elect a new Council. I have been a candidate in every Local Election since 1986 and therefore involved in the elections. I decided last summer that I was retiring from the Council and would step back from my involvement in politics, but watching the Conservative administration in action in Enfield and contemplating the frightening danger of a Conservative Government, I have decided that I cannot stand on the sidelines but must get involved in the election campaign.
I will highlight two issues in this column which I hope will help to show you why I think that it will be worth voting to get rid of the Tories in the local elections.
Last year the Council took on the lease of the former Marks & Spencer store in Palmers Green, announcing its intention to relocate the library there from its current purpose built, Council owned building. There was no consultation on the specific proposal with the local community, the local Traders Association, or local library users, but this was not significant, we were told, because the proposal was in line with the Borough library strategy that had been consulted on. There was significant opposition to the proposal from many local people, and also local traders concerned about the loss of retail-space. It now transpires that the Council has agreed to pay a higher rent than the property was advertised for, does not have planning permission to change the use of the building, did not inspect the property before the lease was signed, and has not thought about how the existing Council owned library building would be used if the library was relocated. Having realised its unpopularity, the Tories have now shelved the proposal despite committing the Council taxpayers to paying rent for the building for the next 25 years. This whole saga demonstrates the incompetence of the local Tories.
Obesity among young people is a major problem in our Borough. Experts accept that if children eat a healthy meal at lunchtime they are less likely to feel the need to snack on unhealthy food and less likely to be overweight. In addition there is clear evidence that well fed pupils perform and behave better at school.  In order to encourage healthy eating among schoolchildren, the Government has made money available for extending eligibility for free school meals, but to get this help, the Local Council has to match fund the money from government. A large number of pupils would qualify in Enfield, but the Tories were not prepared to make the money available despite their claims to be concerned about the wellbeing of children and desire to tackle obesity and also despite the vast financial reserves they hold. Is it not time that the Council put its money where its mouth is!

Bambos Charalambous for Enfield Southgate, (not to be confused with Tory candidate)

Mr Cameron you have lost the plot along with your Tory Cronies.

Not that you ever had one

                                 By George Savva

To fight the election on a sound manifesto with sound proposals is one thing, but to indulge yourself as Mr Cameron and his Tory cronies have done to have a go at the Prime Minister Gordon Brown is hardly what the people will like to hear.
The real issues have never been part of the Tory policy, but if the Conservatives can get away with just throwing   personal abuse then that is all they are capable and are likely to do.

People wanted to hear what can you do better than the Labour.

The real truth is that no p[arty could have done better that Labour during this global economic
crisis.

Many jobs were saved and many people who were on the threshold of having their houses repossessed were saved thanks to the quick action taken by the Labour government to help banks and building societies recover from the debt.

There were record number of house repossession under the Thacher era where Mr Cameron wants us all to go back to.

The crime is relatively down , new hospitals are being built, lowest inflation since 1965, low rate mortgages, all workers have the right to 4 weeks holidays, £200.00 winter fuel and an extra £100.00 for the over 80s. Banned fur farming and stopped fox hunting.

Free school meals and not cutting the milk as Thacher done and was nicknamed Thatcher the milk snatcher.

These are some of the issues and many achievements by Labour in which   Mr Cameron wishes to hide from us.

The mayor of London Johnson wants and will reduce the police force by 455 by 2012 despite fierce opposition from Labour.

Mayor Johnson has resigned as chair of the Police authority (MPA) as this came as a surprise because he said not so long ago.

And I quote. “I will provide strong leadership by taking responsibility and chairing the Metropolitan Police Authority.” He went on to say “It is important for the Mayor to take a public lead I will take personal responsibility.”

You can see from this example alone that the Tories say one thing and they mean another.

You can see a lot of activity in the roads now where the guardrails are removed across London and concern has been expressed by residents and parents and the people affected have not even been consulted.

The removal of guardrails is a safety concern to all.

Human Trafficking.

You remember the action taken by Boris along with the Police to disband the Human Trafficking Unit and transfer it to Clubs and Vice Unit.

Following action taken by Joanne McCartney Assembly Member and Mary Honeyball MEP the police changed their minds.

It will now be a new specialist command unit and it will better recognised.

These are some of the few examples where the Tories across the board,
be it locally nationally or across London have miserably failed.

We have seen the vast areas of achievement and how big a gap and different in approach and policy there is between the Tories and Labour

The choice is clearly simple and the marginal of 2% to Tories may well be changed by next week to over 5% in favour of Labour and this can only mean good news for all the voters who trust Labour who can deliver more than the Tories.

From Jeff Rodin Opposition Labour Leader in Enfield

This article will appear in the Advertiser this week   04/03/10

For several years, the Labour Group in Enfield has drawn attention to the state of the Council’s finances. We have pointed out that while we have no objection to people paying Council Tax to fund good quality local services, what has been happening ever since the Tories took over in 2002 is that the Council has been raising far more tax than it has been spending on services. Every Council Taxpayer in the borough has been forced to deposit a significant sum in the Council’s bank account.

The figures are worth setting out. Since 2002 when the Tories took over, the Council’s reserves have increased by nearly £30m. This is the equivalent of £300 for every Council Taxpayer in the borough.

Year after year the Labour Group has raised this issue. Last year when there was a by-election in Jubilee Ward just before the Council’s budget was set, we were able to raise it directly with the electorate. The by-election became dominated by this issue and the electorate were clear that by voting Labour they were voting to freeze their Council Tax in 2009. The result was a very substantial swing to Labour at a time when the standing of Labour nationally was at record lows in the opinion polls.

When the budget was set last year, Labour put forward the views of the Jubilee Ward electorate and proposed a Council Tax freeze. The Tories refused to agree and used their majority to force through a further increase. We realised at the time and made it clear in the debate that despite their superficial arguments about why it was irresponsible to have a Council Tax freeze, it was their intention to freeze the Council Tax in 2010 as there were local elections in May 2010.

Sure enough, when the Tories proposed their budget for 2010 they froze the Council Tax. They treat the electorate with such contempt and hope that a freeze will impress them, despite the fact that they have been unnecessarily contributing to the Council’s balances for 7 years. The Labour Group supported the Council Tax freeze, after all we wanted it last year as well, and we have gone further by proposing that the freeze should be for at least 2 years, a proposal that was defeated by the Tory majority.

If Labour is elected in May, we pledge that the Council Tax will be frozen in 2011/12. In addition, we will use some of the Council’s resources to fund activity that will begin to tackle some of the serious social issues in the east and south of the borough.

In their desperation to gain re-election, the Tories have even put a leaflet out in Enfield North suggesting that Labour oppose the Council Tax freeze. I have no doubt that the dishonest authors of this leaflet and many of their colleagues, will end up with time on their hands when the electorate has its say.

Makes me wonder if some politicians do live on a different planet.

It makes me wonder sometimes if some politicians do actually live in a real world or in a different planet.

This is not a joke but one look at Mayor Johnson and what he has been up to lately makes one wonder whether he is aware of what is happening around him.

He has increased the the area of the congestion charge zone thus getting the chance to have a bigger income.

If that was not enough   he has increased the bus and train fares.
One would have thought he would stop there, but no, not Boris Johnson.
At a time when security is needed like never before and people at the same time are asking for more bobbies on the beat, what does Johnson decides to do.

Since he has taken  the responsibility to be in charge  of the MET in London, in a shocking move he will cut the police force by over 4000 police  at a time when we need to increase the number of police  on the streets and elsewhere.

One will almost be inclined to say come back Ken Livingstone all is forgiven

        FRIENDS OF WEIR  HALL  LIBRARY
LATEST FROM THE LOCAL AREA

Selling of Millfield Theatre and Arts Complex?
                     Stop them.

When the closure of Weir Hall Library by the Tory controlled Enfield Council  took place, sixteen months ago, at the same time the future of the Millfield Arts Complex was also sealed.( Millfield House, the surrounding grounds, the bistro, Millfield Theatre, and the bar) all have been put on the line to be sold.
Already the Millfield Theatre Booking Office will be moving   to Thomas Hardy House in Enfield Town which is another indication this could mean the beginning of the end of   Millfield Arts Centre.
The council with its Tory leader who is doing everything possible in ruining  Edmonton and by  giving  as much help as possible to Enfield Town  and the affluent west of the borough will not hesitate to sell the Millfield Complex the only remaining place where local people can meet.
Stop the Closure and the selling of Millfield Arts Complex
On May the  6th local elections and possibly national give all your votes to the Labour Candidates to stop the Tory vandals from inflicting a further wound into the community.

Enough damage has been done during the last 8 years of  Conservative rule in Enfield and one look around the streets in Edmonton, shows the sheer neglect in this area   by this council.

Streets full of potholes and litter, uneven and dangerous  pavements,   street lighting in many roads has not been properly connected for months.

We are urging people to support Labour as this will stop the Tories from carrying out their plans to leave us without any services whatsoever.

This is not by any means a political statement but the facts as they stand today.

The choice now rests with the people who have had to put up with  a lot of abuse from the Tories.

The power now rests with the people,  to let the council know what we really think of their unworkable policies at the expense of the people in our area.

Enough is enough  as  the time has come for people of Enfield to kiss goodbye to the Tories or we may risk kissing goodbye to our services if they are allowed to  have another year of Tory policies which will only lead to cutbacks and closures.

We need our Library back and we will like to see a youth provision and services for the elderly improved.
Many are the families whose children have not had a place at the school of their choice because the council lacked vision and proper planning.

The  Government  have given millions to the local council but the council chose to spend it on refurbishing the Carnegie Library in Enfield to the tune of £9 million and leaving Edmonton and our area with no services.

Some of the achievements were down to the sheer hard work by local campaigners along with our   local councilors.

Let us not have a repeat of the last 8 years ever again.

On Wednesday we will observe two minutes’ silence on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month: the exact moment 91 years ago that the guns of the Western Front fell silent.

This year’s events will be particularly poignant because this summer we witnessed the passing of the last Tommy, Harry Patch. With his death, an entire generation has fallen silent and we have lost our living link with the momentous events which did so much to shape our nation.

And so this Armistice Day, we must make anew our promise to Harry and his comrades: that although they are gone, we will never, ever forget.

And tomorrow we will reflect not just on the soldiers of World War One, but all those brave men and women of all races and of all creeds and none who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace and in the cause of freedom.

And I know that we will hold the men and women of our military in our prayers tomorrow as we think about all those who have been killed in Afghanistan this year - heroes who have lost their lives on Afghan streets so that we might be safer on Britain’s streets.

Each life lost represents a family in mourning - a table with an empty space this Christmas, a father who will not be there to walk his daughter down the aisle, a parent who has had to bury their child too soon and a partner who has lost the person they hoped to grow old with.

And so it is our sacred duty to celebrate the courage of the fallen; to honour their extraordinary sacrifice; and to remember them with pride.

So as you pause at home or work; or kneel in church; or stand in front of a war memorial, remember all those who “gave their tomorrow for our today”.

We owe them - and all our war dead - a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay.

My thoughts are very much with all the men and women of our Armed Forces, serving with such distinction at home and overseas, and with the families who share their hardships and the communities which sustain their mission.

Thank you for your service to the country and to us all.

Services to expand not contract
30 November 2009
Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Programme Board (PCTs and Acute Trust) can categorically refute any claims that Barnet and North Middlesex Hospitals Accident and Emergency departments will be downgraded.
In fact, the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey (BEH) strategy will see an expansion of these services, not a contraction.
In the meantime, work is now well underway to begin the implementation of phase 1 of the Clinical Strategy as endorsed last year by the Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson.  This includes centralisation of inpatient paediatrics and the expansion of obstetric, maternity and neonatal services on the Barnet and North Middlesex Hospital sites.
By 2013, Accident & Emergency services will be centralised at Barnet and North Middlesex Hospitals, while Chase Farm Hospital will have a 12-hour, consultant led, Urgent Care Centre.
An elective inpatient centre and a range of other services including outpatients, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and intermediate care will be maintained or developed at Chase Farm Hospital.
Health services across a wide part of North Central London are being reviewed as part of Healthcare for London to deliver better quality care and better value for money to all patients.  The review is still at a very early stage. Any proposals, which are then made by clinicians, will require formal consultation and further discussion with health professionals, patients and the public before final decisions are taken. Proposals will take months to discuss and consult on before final decisions are taken.
Nigel Beverley Chief Executive of NHS Enfield and chair of BEH Strategy Programme Board said:
"It is tremendously exciting to be planning these new services. When delivered the local NHS will be able to offer better quality of services to its patients fit for the 21st century.  To make any suggestion that the Barnet or North Middlesex A&E Departments are being downgraded is irresponsible and misinformed."
The Phase 1 building programme is due to be completed in spring 2011.
